History of Hampi
Hampi is a wonderful gateway for the history buffs. The 14th century city which served as the capital of one of the greatest empires of the world is situated in the Deccan heartland in the state of Karnataka. The history of Hampi goes back to the age of the Hindu epic ‘Ramayana’. The area was known as Vijaypur between the 9th century and 10th century.It was also known as Vijayanagar in 1150 AD. The Vijayanagara empire stretched over three States - Karnataka, Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh. It lasted for over twenty years and often called as the golden era of South Indian history. The Empire, that extended from river Krishna to Cape Comorin,included present Orissa. The central portion is called Hampi today.

The ruined city of Hampi is situated in the Bellary district of Karnataka.Since it receives heavy influx of tourists every year, it has healthy modes of transportation,thereby making it easily reachable.
Reaching Hampi By Air : Belgaum airport is the nearest air link to Hampi. It is situated at a distance of 270 km.The most famous airlines which provides direct flight service from Bangalore and Mumbai is Air Deccan (now Kingfisher Red). From there, one can take a taxi to the city, costing somewhere around Rs 2500.
Reaching Hampi By Train : As Hampi does not have a railway station of its own, Hospet is the nearest railhead to the place.It is 13 km away.Trains are running regularly on this route. There are some special trains which ply once or twice a week. From Bangalore,Hampi Express is the most favored option.
